Formula 1 is set to scrap a plan to lower heating pad temperatures to 50 degrees in 2023.


This season, the temperature of the heaters was reduced to 70 degrees, and in 2024 it is planned to get rid of the covers. During the second practice before the US Grand Prix, the pilots tested the prototype Pirelli tires for 2023, while the maximum temperature of the thermal covers was 50 degrees. Later, the experience was repeated in practice before the stage in Mexico.


According to Motorsport, the plan to reduce the temperature in thermal covers was decided to be abandoned just after the negative feedback received from the pilots during the race weekends in the United States and Mexico.


At the same time, an experiment was conducted in Mexico City in Pirelli - and they reduced the warm-up time for tires in thermal covers from three to two hours. According to the experiment, it turned out that the energy costs when using thermal covers for three hours at a temperature of 50 degrees were higher compared to using thermal covers for two hours, but at a temperature of 70 degrees.


At the same time, F1 has no plans to abandon the plan, which implies a complete ban on the use of thermal covers, starting in 2024.
